"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may
see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
It’s a common saying “You may be the
only bible some people read,” or “You may be the only Jesus some people see.” Imagine
how different our behavior would be if we lived each day with this in mind. You
see, people pay attention to our actions and whether we realize it or not our
actions have the power to influence others. The question is whether you will
use your influence on others for good or for bad.
Sharing the Gospel, or the light of
Christ with others, isn’t about our words and what we know, it’s about our
actions and how we treat people. It’s about “walking the walk” rather than “talking
the talk” and showing others that we can be the face of Christ in a world that
doesn’t always recognize its need for a savior. Living the faith is about being
a loving and generous neighbor to a person in need and treating others as our
self.
As Christians, it isn’t enough to
simply have faith and say “I believe in God” rather our lives should demonstrate
our faith and belief in Christ’s teachings. St. James puts it this way when he
says:
“Indeed someone may say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’
Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to
you from my works,” James 2:18
Or in other words, our works in this
world, should be an illustration of our faith and belief in Christ. If we are
to truly say “I believe in Jesus and all that He taught us,” then our lives
must give witness to that statement.
Easier said than done, right? Indeed,
it’s not always easy to “walk the walk” and as human beings we may often fall
short of living a true authentic Christian life, but that shouldn’t stop us
from trying. After all practice makes perfect, and lucky for us we have a
forgiving and merciful God who never tires of offering us second chances.
Jesus came to us to be an example of
light in a world full of darkness and He didn’t stop there, He shared that light
with each of us so that we could do the same. So let us never tire of
attempting to share our light with the world, let us never cease to live out
our faith as witnesses to Christ’s teachings, and let us always remember that
Jesus is with us in all our attempts and is always there to offer His love and
support to those in need.
