What if we spent less time trying to make our life better than everyone else's? And instead we spent more time trying to making everyone else's life better?
Would it make a difference? I can't say for sure but I can say that if I spent my time trying to improve the life of the person next to me and they did the same then we would both have a better life. It's a strange concept I know. Some might say it borders on socialism or communism or something like that, but that's not what I'm trying to advocate. I'm simply saying let's be kind to one another. What if we all paused for a moment and instead of trying to improve our lot in life we tried to improve someone else's life? Stop reading and actually imagine it for just a second.
Perhaps, say good morning, smile, hold the door open for someone, help someone that is in need. Ask someone how their day was and actually listen to what they have to say. Some things are simpler than others but they each can make a difference. Sure you might be a dollar short for your coffee the next day but at least another person got to enjoy a cup of coffee, and is that such a bad thing?
I'm well aware that I'm not the first person to say this. Most of you have you have heard this all before or something similar. Think of this as a reminder or a fortification of kindness and love in this world. Gandalf in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of The Rings says it best when he says:
"Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I have found that is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."
Imagine a world filled with small acts of kindness and love. A world of loving people that increase the amount of love in the world. That is what we can accomplish by caring for the people around us. I believe that each and everyone of us has the capacity to spread love to the rest of the world. It might take a little extra effort and thought but the result is worth it. The justification for kindness and love is far greater than the justification for the opposite. The result of kindness is a smile on another person's face and you will find a grateful heart in those around you. The world will shine a little brighter and life will be a little sweeter.
The late Father James Keller once said:
"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle".
It is a simple statement but it puts everything that I'm trying to say in one simple sentence. So be kind. Care for one another. Let love into your hearts. Let it overflow into every aspect of your life. Go out into the world and seek to give others a reason to shine bright.
Be The Light
